It’s bittersweet to see summer come to an end, but fall is finally here! That means colder weather, cozy sweaters and unfortunately an adjustment in our skin. As the seasons change, so should your skincare. With temperatures becoming cooler and less humid (yay!) the air becomes drier resulting in needing more hydration in our skin. Similar to adding more layers of clothes as it gets colder, we need to layer on more hydration for our skin. Heavy creams are a common “go-to” for many suffering from dry skin. Instead of relying on thick, heavy creams I recommended layering on hydrating serums providing nourishment to the skin. Serums penetrate deeper than thick creams that just lay on the surface of the skin. Using hydrating serums that contain the ingredient hyaluronic acid will feel like a big drink of water for your skin because it is a substance found in our joint that holds 1000x its weight in water.
A common mistake when dealing with drier skin is inadequate exfoliation. Exfoliation and hydration go hand in hand, a dynamic duo. Without enough exfoliation, dead skin builds up on the surface and prevents hydration to absorb into the skin. It is also very important to use hydrating, nourishing serums after exfoliation to prevent over exfoliation. When the skin is feeling drier, it may also feel tighter and more sensitive. Chemical exfoliation can be more beneficial when the skin is feeling compromised. Using acids such as lactic and glycolic 2-3 times a week can help to gently exfoliate while allowing hydration to fully penetrate and absorb into the skin.
