The Multi Modality Approach to Acne

By Emilia Montalvo, Master Aesthetician at Javan Wellness

Rome wasn’t built in a day and the journey to skin health should also take some time and patience. When a client comes to me, presenting with acne prone skin, I always ensure that they understand that there’s no overnight one and done fix. I believe that utilizing multiple treatments with patience and consistency can yield the best results.

What is acne? Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become trapped by oil, dirt and dead skin cells. This buildup of debris can cause blackheads, whiteheads and sometimes painful and inflamed cystic lesions. These occurrences of buildup can become more frequent due to hormonal imbalance, improper diet, incorrect product usage, stress, and a sensitized skin barrier. There is no cure for acne, but it can be managed and greatly improved with diligence and consistency.

Evaluating and creating the proper home care regimen is the first step in skin health. Often times, we think that having a 10-step home care routine with lots of harsh ingredients will be the best option, but with inflamed and painful acne I believe that less is more. Choosing the right products that are formulated effectively to match your specific needs are what can make the biggest change. I recommend using products that will help heal and stabilize your skin’s natural barrier with gentle yet effective exfoliation. Starting professional treatments with customized facials 4 to 6 weeks apart can ensure that we are cleaning out the skin properly and prepping it for more in depth treatments. Depending on the level of acne I also love incorporating chemical peels. Chemical peels offer a controlled concentration of acids on the skin to speed up cellular turnover, dry up over producing oil glands and improve discoloration in the skin. Some of my favorite chemical peels are Perfect Derma Peel and ZO 3 step peel. They both offer exceptional exfoliation to provide the best skin rejuvenation.

Once acne has been controlled with a consistent home care routine and regular facials, we can incorporate more minimally invasive treatments that will help remodel skin texture and tone. Old acne spots can produce scarring, rough texture, hyperpigmentation and post inflammatory erythema. Some of my favorite treatments for improving all over skin tone and texture are Microneedling, Moxi and BBL. These technologies offer controlled injury to the skin to heat up and rebuild damaged collagen for smoother brighter skin. Consistent use of different modalities will keep a continuation of skin cell turnover offering the healthiest skin to prevent new acne damage.

Using multiple modalities in a slow but consistent manner will always yield the best results! Get started on your journey to clear skin with a custom facial with us at Javan Anti-Aging and Wellness.
